Brown Cow Ice Cream Floats

Serves 1-20 Prep Time 5 minutes   Rated:

The exact origin of ice cream floats is not clear, but they are believed to have originated in the United States during the late 19th century. The most popular story suggests that ice cream floats were invented by Robert McCay Green, a 'soda fountain' owner in Philadelphia, in 1874. According to the story, Green ran out of ice for his sodas and decided to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the soda instead. The result was a delicious and refreshing drink that quickly became popular.

Another story tells that floats were first created by Frank J. Wisner. The story goes that in 1893, Wisner was looking at the snow-capped mountains and was inspired to add a scoop of ice cream to his root beer soda to create a drink that looked like the snow-capped peak of the mountain. He named the drink 'Black Cow, (largely due to the blackness of the root beer) and it became very popular. Brown Cows were next when cola was used as opposed to root beer.

Regardless of who actually invented the ice cream float, it quickly became a classic American treat and remains popular today. The most common flavors for ice cream floats are root beer, cola, and orange fizz. I remember my first Brown Cow, I was so intrigued by the name that I just had to order it. The addition of chocolate to cola, is kind of weird I know, but you will be syruprised, by just how good it is!

The kids will love this and if you make your own Fermented Cola, you will too! (And apparently, you could add Kahlua to this too...just saying!)

Need

Do

1

Obviously you need a few ingredients in the fridge or freezer for this one.

2

Drizzle the glass you will use with the Brew Choc Concentrate Syrup. Fill half way with cola, whether you have made it yourself or not!

3

Add 1 scoop of ice cream, then top off the glass with more cola. The second scoop of ice cream is traditionally perched on the edge of the glass, so go for it! (Press down firmly so that it doesn't swan dive onto the table or fall into the float.)

4

Insert straw...imbibe!
