Conventional Method: Add shea butter, coconut oil and carrier oil to a glass bowl and heat until completely melted using a) or b) method. a) Double boiler method – place bowl on a pot of gently simmering water and stir frequently. b) Microwave method – heat in short bursts on low, stopping and stirring frequently.

Sit on bench to cool and add essential oils. Stir until combined.

Place bowl in fridge until almost solidified. It will need to feel thick and firm when touched.

Using a spatula, scrape cream away from the sides of the bowl and use a hand or electric beater to whip until opaque, white and fluffy.

Scoop into a container or jar.

Thermomix Method: Add shea butter, coconut oil and carrier oil to Thermomix bowl and melt 4-5 min/70ºC/speed 1-2, until completely melted.

Allow to rest until cool, then add essential oils. Mix for 10-15 sec/speed 3 until combined.

Place bowl in fridge until almost solidified. It will need to feel thick and firm when touched.

Using a spatula, scrape cream away from the sides of the bowl then whip 30-40 sec/speed 5 or until opaque, white and fluffy.

Scoop into a container or jar.

To use:

  • Using clean fingers or a paddle, scoop a generous amount of balm and apply to body.
  • May also be used as a face cream; use sparingly on face and neck.
  • Store out of direct sunlight.
  • Try Lemongrass and Ginger essential oils in place of the Wild Orange and Grapefruit.

RECIPE NOTES

  • It is imperative to wait until your mixture has practically solidified before whipping.
  • Keep in a cool place!!! If it gets hot it WILL melt!!
  • If butter hardens in containers, use a spatula to scoop a small amount out and melt between warm hands before applying to body. However, if you let it cool completely before whipping, it shouldn’t harden.
  • Beware – citrus essential oils can be phototoxic when used directly and undiluted on the skin, however recipes like this shouldn’t be a problem. In saying that, if you are concerned, don’t apply it immediately before sun exposure.
  • Double the essential oils if you want a more powerful aroma.
  • Coconut oil is incredibly moisturising and its anti-oxidant, antibacterial and antimicrobial richness make it a wonderful anti-aging moisturiser.
  • Shea butter is nourishing, moisturising and anti-inflammatory. With a high concentration of fatty acids and vitamins, Shea butter can help soften skin and reduce wrinkles.
  • Wild orange essential oil may help with wrinkles, inflammation and tissue repair; it is an uplifting oil, acting as an anti-depressant.
