The 7 Signs You Should be Monitoring for GUT INSTINCT
The 7 Signs You Should be Monitoring for GUT INSTINCT
Your gut does far more than digest food. It plays a central role in immunity, mood, energy levels, inflammation and even skin health
Many people don’t realise their gut needs support until symptoms become disruptive, but the signs are often there long before that.
Here are seven of the most common indicators your gut may need attention.
1. Persistent Bloating
Occasional bloating can happen after a large or rich meal. But if you regularly feel distended, tight or uncomfortable, especially later in the day, that’s not something to ignore.
Chronic bloating may suggest:
Imbalance in gut bacteria
Poor digestion of certain carbohydrates
Reduced microbial diversity
Feeling 'pregnant by 3pm' shouldn’t be your normal.
2. Irregular Bowel Movements
Your digestive system thrives on rhythm. Constipation, loose stools, urgency, or unpredictable patterns can signal imbalance.
Healthy digestion typically means:
Comfortable, regular bowel movements
No straining
No urgency
A sense of complete elimination
Stress, low fibre diversity, dehydration and microbiome imbalance can all play a role.
Adding fermented foods to your daily intake has been known to improve all of your digestive system, from top to bottom...literally!
3. Increasing Food Sensitivities
If foods you once tolerated now cause bloating, discomfort or fatigue, it may not simply be the food itself.
When the gut lining becomes compromised or microbial balance shifts, the body may react more strongly to certain foods. Supporting the gut ecosystem can sometimes improve tolerance over time.
For example, I find I can only have so called 'normal bread' on few occasions without a sensitivity presenting itself. However, my body is perfectly happy with my (huge) sourdough intake! I would go so far as to say it is improved after my consumption of sourdough. There is 'fake' sourdough available commercially that is completely different to our homemade version which is fermented by lactic acid bacteria. It’s the combination of different bacterial strains and the production of these acids that gives sourdough its characteristic tang. But more importantly, these acids drive the transformation of the bread’s nutritional profile in ways that industrial processes simply cannot replicate. (This may need to be a whole different article!)
If foods you once tolerated now cause discomfort, your gut lining or microbial balance may be compromised.
Often it’s not the food; it’s the ecosystem digesting it.

4. Low Energy or Brain Fog
Your gut influences:
• Nutrient absorption
• Inflammation
• Neurotransmitter production
If you feel flat, foggy, or constantly tired, your microbiome may be part of the picture.
5. Frequent illness or low immunity
Around 70% of the immune system lives in the gut.
Frequent colds or slow recovery can indicate reduced microbial resilience.

6. Skin Issues
Acne, eczema, rosacea and inflammatory skin conditions often have gut connections via the gut–skin axis.
7. Cravings, Especially Sugar
Certain bacteria thrive on sugar, and can influence cravings.
If willpower feels impossible, it may not be a discipline issue it may be a gut health issue. Fixing your gut health may fix your cravings and your weight may adjust accordingly.
