Love Spicy food? There are some very good reasons why, right here in our Magic Ten Spicy Recipe Collection! (OH and there is science behind it too!)

Not everyone can handle spicy foods, but for those of you who love them, there’s a good reason behind the obsession.

When capsaicin – the chemical in spicy foods that makes them so hot, Hot, HOT – hits your tongue, your body registers the sensation as pain. This in turn triggers the release of endorphins, otherwise known as “happy” chemicals that give you an instant head-to-toe feeling of pleasure. Now I know that sounds a little off...but let me explain...

Capsaicin may also boost your metabolism...yep, that means eating spicy foods can give you a rush that may make your body more efficient at burning calories. Something we all like the sound of no doubt.

It can also reduce hunger. (I find that everytime I eat a big bowl of spicy curry...hunger, reduced!) Kidding aside, one study showed that people taking capsaicin ate less food throughout the day than those who didn't take any. Specifically, those taking capsaicin supplements ate 10% less, while those who drank a capsaicin-containing beverage ate 16% less. (Scurries off to create a spicy drink!)

Spices and their active components may provide many benefits for your stomach.

For example, cayenne pepper may help boost the stomach's defense against infections, increase digestive fluid production and help deliver enzymes to the stomach, aiding digestion.

The capsaicin in cayenne peppers shows promise in reducing the risk of cancer. It may do this by attacking many different pathways in the cancer cell growth process.

In fact, studies have shown that capsaicin can slow the growth of cancer cells and even cause cell death for many different types of cancer, including prostate, pancreatic and skin cancer. These are only lab studies and non conclusive, but I find it interesting. Lots of us are looking at gut health as coming from pro-biotics or fermented foods, but there is definitely an advantage to adding spicy hot foods to your daily diet for the same reason. (My Kimchi has to be a go...fermented AND spicy!)
