I am not sure when rice bubbles became rice crispies in my vocabulary, but I think it was sometime around when I lived with my family in the USA as a teenager...so rice crispies they have always been for me.

Here’s a list of popular rice crispy alternatives from various countries that could be used in place of traditional rice crispies for a similar texture and crunch:

Cheerios or other puffed oat cereals

Cornflakes (crushed slightly for texture)

Kix (puffed corn cereal)

United Kingdom

Weetabix Minis

Shreddies

Cheerios or other puffed oat cereals

Australia

Rice Bubbles (our version of rice crispies)

Cornflakes

India

Poha chivda (flattened rice, lightly toasted for crispiness)

Cornflakes (in larger cities)

Germany

Puffed spelt (Dinkelpops, a common whole grain puff, and you gotta love THAT name!)

Cornflakes

Cheerios or similar oat-based cereals

France

Puffed rice (called riz soufflé)

Cornflakes

Muesli clusters (for a crunchy, textured variation)

Brazil

These alternatives should work well in recipes needing that familiar crispy, airy texture, adapting the recipe to what’s accessible locally.

Need

  • 100 Grams butter cubed BUY
  • 200 Grams commercial marshmallows
  • 100 Grams chocolate dark plus a little extra to act as glue BUY
  • 20 Grams cocoa powder (I used dark brute) BUY
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla bean paste BUY
  • 1 Pinch pink salt flakes BUY
  • 5 Cups puffed rice cereal, cocoa puffs would be even better potentially
  • 16 jaffas (or other red round candy)
  • googley eyes from a cake decorating supplier
  • dry pretzels, they need to be larger rather than the mini's

Do

1

Line a slice tin with baking paper. (average size, 27.5cm x 17.5cm x 3.5cm)

2

Place butter, marshmallows, chocolate, vanilla and salt into Thermomix bowl. Melt 7 min/100°C/speed 2. Cool slightly before proceeding.

3

Place rice bubbles into a large mixing bowl. Pour over the marshmallow mix and stir to combine.

4

Press into prepared tin, flatten with wet hands and then score the 16 pieces that will be each reindeer. Add eyes and the jaffa noses then place the whole thing into the fridge to set for a couple of hours.

5

If you need to glue the noses on, (some will stick and others may not) melt a little bit of extra chocolate in the microwave and use as glue. This is also how you can stick the antlers on. You really won't see the 'glue' when they are set and finished.
