Prepped well in advance, this is the easiest dessert you will ever create and is perfect for summertime. Your coffee loving guests will thank you!

The affogato was designed to feature two of Italy's favorite things: espresso and gelato. Literally meaning "drowned," affogato first appeared in the dictionary in the early 1990s and the dessert drink is now really popular with coffee lovers worldwide. You can make it with espresso and vanilla gelato, or switch to strongly brewed coffee and vanilla ice cream. If you like, spike it with a liqueur—amaretto, hazelnut, and Irish cream are all going to work really well flavour wise. We are pretty sure this would also be awesome with a hot shot of Brew Choc instead of coffee and this recipe is using a combo of both. You may actually sleep better at night with a brew choc dessert!

In theory, pouring hot coffee over ice cream should cause it to melt, but that's not the case here. The trick is to serve it in an ice-cold glass or dessert dish. This balances out the temperature difference and the coffee will slide down the sides of the glass, encasing the sweet frozen cream. Place glasses in the freezer for at least 15 minutes (though we recommend much longer)—or before you sit down for dinner—and they'll be ready for your special dessert.

To quickly chill glasses for affogatos, you can wrap each glass in a wet paper towel and place them into the freezer. They will be frosty within 5 minutes.

However you chill your glasses, enjoy this easy recipe with one of our awesome vanilla ice cream recipes. We have a few!
