Orange Cardamom Cold Brew

Bright, spiced, and refreshingly smooth, this orange cardamom cold brew is the ultimate summer coffee upgrade.

I recently visited Perth Bakery Miller and Baker with my daughter in law and the BABY...because they live in walking distance. I have been before and they often have cardamom spiced baked goods on offer. On this occasion they had a cardamom and orange latte available and I did love it.

I have been meaning to get around to playing with cold brew coffee. I did try a cold brew Brew Choc a while back and it was a pretty big no from me. The nature of chocolate means it needs the heat to extract the flavour successfully. Not so for coffee.

Anyhoo, full circle, decided to try cold brew AND with the addition of the cardamom and orange and WOWSERS, we were delighted. It was a huge success at the family brunch on the weekend.  Perfect for summer, and for getting coffee sorted for large numbers of people simultaneously...plus yum. Orange and cardamom, match made in heaven. I do think you could use doTERRA oils for both the cardamom and the orange, but I decided to lean into regular ingredients, rather than oils this time...but next time I will try that and report back!

If you have never tried cold brew, let this be the sign to give it a go. There are some health and well being benefits to cold brew, it isn’t just a trend, it’s a smoother, gentler way to enjoy your caffeine fix. Because it’s brewed slowly in cold water, it has a naturally sweeter, less acidic taste that’s easier on your stomach and teeth. The slow extraction process also brings out subtle chocolatey and nutty notes, making it deliciously complex without needing extra sugar. It’s lower in bitterness, naturally refreshing, and perfect for sipping straight or adding milk, cream, or even sparkling water for a twist. Plus, cold brew packs a stronger caffeine punch per cup, giving you a steady energy lift without the jittery crash of hot-brewed coffee. So there you have it.

Flavour, and better for you. Hope you try it. Don't just stop at orange and cardamom.

Here’s a list of flavour additions that work beautifully with cold brew, some classic, some a little unexpected:

Vanilla bean or vanilla extract

Cinnamon sticks

Star anise

Nutmeg

Cocoa nibs or raw cacao

Coconut flakes

Fresh mint leaves

Lavender buds

Rose petals

Chilli flakes for a subtle heat

Ginger slices

Lemon or lime peel

Almond extract

Hazelnut syrup or crushed hazelnuts

Maple syrup

Pink salt for a salted caramel vibe

Toasted cardamom pods

Cloves

Fresh berries (raspberries or blueberries)

A splash of bourbon, rum, or amaretto for a cocktail twist

Do

1

You will need a large jar with a lid that will fit about 2.2L of liquid or more for this recipe.

2

Place cardamom seeds into the Thermomix bowl and mill 10 sec/speed 10.

3

Add the finely grated orange zest and coffee to the Thermomix bowl and mill 20 sec/speed 8. Your coffee shouldn't be super fine, so the time may depend slightly on your coffee beans.

4

Place this whole mixture into the jar. Top with the water and stir vigorously to combine.

5

Leave the jar on the kitchen bench for 24 hours before straining and using on demand. I ended up using a fine sieve, but you could use a coffee filter or nut milk bag if doing the whole amount.

6

Pour over ice and maple syrup to taste and add milk or not. Garnish with orange slices.

7

I am drinking it without the maple syrup but using milk. It is not as dark as regular latte in appearance but tastes nice and strong nonetheless.
